Thesis Proposal Format

When students are first formulating their thesis projects, they may have to submit their ideas within a certain thesis proposal format. While thesis proposal formats may vary from department to department, their goal is to convey the writer's ideas efficiently, solidifying them both for the writer and for the major professor. To that end, students will provide a grouping of several points of information that will set the direction for their projects.

First, according to most thesis proposal formats, students will offer a brief description of the ideas that they wish to explore and the reasons they believe those ideas are valid. If the writer has progressed sufficiently in the idea's development, he or she may offer a working thesis statement, which should mention each major point that the thesis will make.

Second, the university department may require within their thesis proposal format guidelines that students include a bibliography of the sources they have consulted thus far. At this point, students should have conducted a fair amount of research, but they should be aware that the major professor may redirect the thesis project and open up new areas of study.

Third, thesis proposal formats often contain some sort of timeline in which the student states the intended project milestones, such as the dates for completion of the first draft, for completion of revisions, and for defense. Students should try to make their timelines as reasonable as possible; while a fast-paced project may not allow for thorough research or idea development and may cause a great deal of stress, an overly slow-paced project may cause the student to feel a lack of motivation.

University departments often provide a handout that states their exact wishes for a thesis proposal format. While the above steps will cover most of the concerns of a thesis proposal, each department will add its own nuances to the thesis proposal format, of which the student must be aware.
