Write a Thesis


Before beginning to write a thesis, learning a few principles may help ease the process. These principles include brushing up on basic writing skills, knowing how to appropriately use and cite research sources, and incorporating one's own thoughts into the thesis.

First, students who have to write theses often have not studied the mechanics of writing in a long time, especially students who are writing theses for disciplines outside the humanities. One may easily relearn proper writing style by reading a grammar or writing book; many of these books target popular audiences and are quite entertaining. They are also often quite short, and the investment of an afternoon or two in order to read them can vastly improve the quality of one's writing.

Second, when students write theses, they must interact effectively with research sources. Students should use research sources as a means to advance their own ideas; they should cite all evidence that supports their points, and if they have found evidence or authoritative opinions that disagree with their points, they should explain why that evidence or opinion does not jeopardize the validity of the thesis's idea. Students may quote sources, whether in phrases, full sentences, or strings of sentences; they may paraphrase sentences from the sources; or, if they need to use an idea found in a lengthier section of a source, they may summarize that source or parts thereof. Students should try to avoid the excessive use of long quotes, if possible.

Third, one should appropriately incorporate one's own thoughts into the thesis. One of the tasks for the student who has to write a thesis is to balance his or her own thoughts with the evidence and opinions found through research. Students should claim an authoritative voice over their ideas and research, but they should avoid the use of first- and second-person pronouns. Instead, they should simply behave as if their ideas were fact, drawing in all evidence and supporting logic in order to make a persuasive argument in favor of those ideas.
